May Love Letter: Exploration through mediums

Happy May! I hope you had a great April. Mine was full of a lot of changes and transitions. Almost every year, a big shift will happen in my life right around Easter. Last year, around this time is when Dan and I started thinking about moving and 4 months later we moved to Austin. This year, I ended up starting a new job helping with the grant administration of the city’s arts funding. It all kind of happened out of nowhere, but I’m so happy to be a part of the art community in a new way. So for the past month I have been creating a new routine, spending a lot more time around people, and learning more about the local art community.

My art practice has been shifting a lot as well. In April, I started a class on public art that has been meeting twice a week. I have worked on several public art projects in the past but never have led my own. So this month I applied to my first ever public art call focused on temporary light installations. We’ll see if my idea gets chosen and I can share more about it next month.

May’s Mail Club

I am also learning more about animation and developing my digital art skills. This month’s sticker sheet is a collection of drawings I did in Procreate. These are sketches of my dream ceramic collection. I haven’t thrown any pottery in 3 years, so I think I will need to go visit a ceramic studio soon.

The prints from this month are experiments I did combining works on paper with fiber. I am finding myself exploring how to combine two different mediums together. In addition to these prints, I have been experimenting with analog and digital technology. I went on an adventure and found an old Hi8 video camera that I have been playing around with. Maybe I can figure out a way to share some of this work in next month’s mail club. If you are looking for a creative challenge this month, try making something that brings two different mediums or formats together (you could even use pieces from the mail club as a starting point). I would love to see what you create, so feel free to share your creations with me @annarichards.art

I also launched my first ever merch this month. If you love art, baseball hats, and corduroy, you may want to snag one of these!

Thanks for reading, thanks for being here. I hope you have a wonderful month!

Love & light

-anna
